Gear: Ping G425 Crossover iron
Price: $250 each with Ping Alta CB, Aldila Rogue or Mitsubishi Tensei Orange shafts and Arccos-enabled Golf Pride Lite 360 Tour Velvet grip
Specs: Hollow-bodied stainless steel construction with a water-repellent finish. 2-iron (18 degrees), 3-iron (20 degrees) and 4-iron (22.5 degrees) versions.
Hollow-bodied irons used to be designed for slow-swinging, high-handicap players who have trouble getting the ball airborne. Over the past five years, that has changed.
There are hollow irons made for mid-handicap golfers and even hollow-bodied clubs made to look like muscleback blades for highly skilled players. Ping’s Crossover iron has been among the most popular because it appeals to iron lovers yet produces hybrid-like distance off the tee and from the fairway. With the release of the latest version, the G425 Crossover, the company has tried to make it even better.
The achieve more distance in the G425 Crossover, Ping made the face 7 percent thinner than the hitting area in the previous edition, the G410 Crossover. A thinner face by itself would flex more, but engineers also designed the thin area in the leading edge to hinge more than previous Crossovers. As a result, the entire hitting surface flexes more efficiently for increased speed and distance.
The G425 Crossover also produces a higher ball flight for increased stopping power on the greens, and it has a 6 percent higher moment of inertia than the G410 Crossover, which means it is more forgiving.
The G425 was given Ping’s Hydropearl Stealth finish. It is the same finish found on Ping’s Glide 2.0 Stealth wedges and gives the club a darker look, and it helps repel water from the hitting surface to enhance performance of the grooves in wet conditions.
Each G425 Crossover come standard with a Golf Pride Lite 360 Tour Velvet grip fitted with an Arccos sensor. Golfers who purchase one or more of the G425 driver, fairway wood, hybrid, iron (up to five) or Crossover are eligible for 14 free Arccos screw-in sensors and a 90-day app free trial for a $19.99 shipping and handling fee.
